Happy Columbus Day

Welcome friends!

I know I said previously I intended to talk about my long list of issues with the Republican Party this week but something else has crossed my mind recently so it will just have to wait.  Yeah, I suppose another post on Republicans would have been entirely appropriate given the last minute momentum Mitt Romney has managed to generate in the recent debates by basically repudiating (or at least pretending to repudiate) most of his previous positions and thus further obscuring his beliefs and intentions.  (I had a good chuckle at President Obama’s quip after the event that he had been in a debate with someone claiming to be Mitt Romney.)  Of course I suppose it’s pretty much what one might have expected given that Republican strategists have been quite upfront about trying to take Mr. Romney and his ideas, or lack thereof, out of the equation as much as possible (which is pretty sensible, when you think about it) and make the election more of a referendum on how people think President Obama has been doing recently.  (A rather odd strategy in itself since I don’t think the guy has been doing that bad at all under the circumstances but that’s neither here nor there.)  However, after failing to accomplish this objective for weeks on the campaign trail who could have predicted it would play out so well on TV?  Is there something about that particular medium that makes glib dishonesty more appealing?  Is that why there’s so much garbage on TV?  Hmm, I’ll have to look into it some day.  Anyway, the bottom line is it now looks like we’re in a horse race after all, which is definitely a rather unpleasant development on many levels.  But life goes on.  Anyway, I thought I might put off my little summary of issues with the Republican Party until next time and instead go on a bit of lark and address what must surely be the most asinine and embarrassing of official American national holidays: Columbus Day.

Hey, everybody likes a holiday.  Me too.  But I wonder, what the heck are we supposed to be celebrating on Columbus Day?  ... Sorry but only selected archived (previous year) posts are currently available full text on this website.  All posts including this one are available in my annual anthology ebook series available at the Amazon Kindle Bookstore for a nominal fee.  Hey, we all need to make a buck somehow, right?  If you find my timeless jewels of wisdom amusing or perhaps even amusingly irritating throw me a bone now and then.  Thank you my friends!
