The Straight Olympics

Welcome friends!

Did you hear about the Straight Olympics taking place this winter in Sochi, Russia?  Pretty exciting stuff.  Oh, you thought it was the normal Olympics?  No, no; not this time.  From what various heads of state including President Obama and Prime Minister Cameron have been saying recently it looks like we’ve decided to accommodate our Russian friends on this one so we’re changing it around and just doing a Straight Olympics this year.  I suppose there’s probably some money at stake or whatever.

Yes, Russia is a funny case, isn’t it?  I think many people expected Russia to just rejoin normal Western society once its communist dictatorship went away but I guess they were wrong, weren’t they? ... Conservative Egotism Run Amok II: Nationalism and Ancestor Worship

Looks like I finally have a chance to complete my thought about what I was calling in an earlier post hyper-egotism, that is, egotism that extends to other people.  Recall that in the previous post I was discussing hyper-egotism in the context of what I termed religious identity disorder but I suggested that the same general phenomenon probably underlies a great number of other social maladies including nationalism, so let me just finish up the discussion with a few words on nationalism and as a special treat I’ll throw in a few words on ancestor worship.  Yes, it’s a two for one deal!  You can’t beat that! ...
